Astoria

astoria

Astoria is a city located on the bank of the Columbia River. The current population of the city is around 10,000. The city is surrounded by mountains, beautiful forests, sea, and three rivers. Owing to its beauty and hills found here, it is famous as “Little San Francisco of the Pacific Northwest.” Warrenton, a small and beautiful city with population of 4,500 is just across the Young Bay in Astoria. The broad and beautiful beaches and Fort Steven State Park adds beauty to this city.

Astoria and Warrenton city’s climate is moderate. The not too hot summers and soft winters make this city a beautiful place to stay. While some of the nights in Astoria can be freezing, rest time of the year is soothing. Due to good amount of rain in this area, this city is full of greenery.

It is said that American Captain, Robert Gray sailed to the region for the first time between Oregon and Washington in 1972. After ten years, President Jefferson requested the Army Captain, Meriwether Lewis, to search the shortest and feasible water communication between Columbia, Colorado and Oregon for the purpose of trade.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition left Pittsburgh August 31, 1803. The Corps of Discovery entered the Lower Columbia River in the November of 1805, and stayed through March 1806. They “wintered over” at Fort Clatsop, where it rained on all but 12 days, hunting, making moccasins, and other clothing, trading with the Clatsop, Tillamook, and Chinook Indians, and working on their journals.

In 1811, after five years of this event, a trading post was established here. Fort Astoria, which is now a monument in the city was established at that time.
