Captain George Flavel House Museum

captain george flavel house museum

One can have a great experience of the past and the history of Astoria by walking in the Captain George Flavel House Museum. This elegant museum was built in 1885 by Captain George Flavel, the first millionaire of Astoria and a Columbia River bar pilot. This museum is a fine example of the Queen Anne style architecture. Magnificent artwork and period furnishings can be noticed here. The Flavel House is situated on the park-like ground that covers an entire block of the city. This stylish Victorian mansion has been successfully recovered and returned to its previous situation by historic restoration experts in the city.

The exterior of the museum is quite decorative, with hipped roof, verandas, and balconies. It is renowned for a fourth-story cupola. This cupola was believed to be used by Captain Flavel and his wife to enjoy river traffic. As tourists walk through the huge, big-hall type rooms, with a stylish woodwork, they discover art, furnishings, and decorations used a century ago. This museum is a fine example of the woodworker’s skills. The six handcrafted fireplace layers that are crafted from nice hardwoods are designed by special imported tiles from Asia and Europe.

The Captain George Flavel House Museum is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Clatsop County Historical Society runs The Flavel House as a museum since 1950. When the Christmas season comes, traditional plum pudding and very tasty tea is served in its dining room.
