Cleetwood Trail

Visitors need to hike the scenic Cleetwood Cove Trail if they willing to reach the lakeshore of the beautiful Crater Lake. This famous trail is situated to the north of the Crater Lake. In fact, it is the only legal and the safest way to access the Lake. The trail is open to public from late-June to mid-October.
The 1-mile long Cleetwood Cove Trail is at an elevation of 700 ft (213.3 m) and it drops down from the East Rim Drive trailhead to the lakeshore. Only those who are in a good physical condition are allowed to hike the trail. People with breathing, heart, or leg problems should not attempt hiking this trail. It is highly advisable to carry along with you a sunscreen, mosquito repellents, and plenty of water. Hikers are also advised to wear only closed-toe shoes. Toilet facilities are available at the boat dock area as well as at the trailhead.
The trail offers breathtaking views of the magnificent, bluest of the blue Crater Lake. A reasonable goal of the trail in the beginning can be the bench at the 4th hairpin turn. This bench is made under a tall Shasta red fir. By walking a few steps from here, one can view boat landing about 550 feet (170 m) down to the lake level.
The next stop is only at a distance of 0.4 miles (0.6 km) from here. The Cleetwood flow is the next attraction along the trail. It is a lava flow extending from here to the lake. The bright yellow flowers of the Rabbit brush golden weed can be found on the edge of this overlook. From here, the next stop is at a distance of 3.9 miles (6.3 km). The major attraction ahead on the trail is the spectacular lave cliffs covered with light green lichen. Even if you are not a cowboy, hiking this trail can be a great experience.
