Columbia River Maritime Museum

columbia river maritime museum

Constructed in 1962, the Columbia River Maritime Museum is well known as the West Coast’s finest maritime museum, located in the state of Oregon. The Great Hall, six Galleries, and the Lightship Columbia show the rich maritime history of Pacific Northwest. It is run by a non profit organization and you do not have to even pay for an entry in this museum.

This museum was founded when Rolf Klep, a resident of Astoria, came back to his native place after retirement from a job of a great graphic artist on the east coast. After coming back, a group of Klep’s colleagues and Klep, who was an old collector of marine objects, decided to build a museum to protect the rich maritime inheritance of the whole Columbia River region.

Today, this museum is considered as a well known museum for its reputation for the high quality exhibits and the range of its collections that gives it an honor of the premium maritime museum in the entire Country. It was the first museum in Oregon that matched national accreditation standards, and has been elected as the certified maritime museum in Oregon.

Here you can experience the marine transportation of the early days of dugout canoes. A full range of objects, from the age of sail to the present can be noticed. You can watch a vivid 12-minute movie that gives an introduction of the history of life and trade that started through the Columbia River. You can participate in four attractive and hands-on exhibits. Boarding the Lightship Columbia, which is a National Historic Landmark, can be a nice experience.
