Cove Palisades State Park

lake billy chinook

The Cove Palisades State Park, situated in the eastern Jefferson County, Oregon is a state park. It is located in the central part of the state, and is managed by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Located on the surrounding grounds and waters of Lake Billy Chinook, it is an home of the Deschutes, Crooked and Metolius Rivers.

The park has so much to offer. Two full-service camps, food, rental cabins, sale supplies, access to harbor from Lake Billy Chinook, picnic areas, fishing, and hiking trails are most popular things anybody looks here for. This park also provides its historical explanation, as well as the Crooked River Petroglyph.

Lake Billy Chinook is situated in a canyon made by the three rivers. This lake was named in honor of Billy Chinook who an affiliate of the Wasco tribe. He worked as John C. Frémont’s guide in the same region of the lake. The lake boundaries are not limited to just Cove Palisades State Park.

Although, fish passage facilities were given at Round Butte Dam, but anadromous fish, like Chinook salmon could not succeed to pass the dam. So, the dam's completion migratory fish have blocked tributaries such as the Crooked River.

The area is covered by the Crooked River and Deschutes Rivers. The remote, 200-acre plateau was called The Island (Actually, it is peninsula, but its appearance is like an island due to its remoteness by high, vertical cliffs). It was chosen a research natural region in 1986. This place is a good place for all the activities described above.
