Hells Canyon Reservoir

hells canyon reservoir

A large portion of land enclosed within the three reservoirs of Hells Canyon is positioned in the south of the National Recreation Area. Boating and Fishing are well-liked activities at all the three reservoirs that are situated on the Snake River, the biggest Scenic and Wild River in Idaho.

Brownlee Reservoir is the major one of the three. It is spread over a distance of 52 miles (83.6 km) and is very well known for its outstanding fishing prospects. A survey in 1989 revealed that Brownlee was among the most admired fishing hole in entire state. Its fame has continued. Local and stocked fish mainly include Perch, Rainbow Trout, sturgeon, crappie catfish, bullhead, pumpkinseed, and sunfish.

Brownlee is accessible from several places in Oregon, counting Farewell Bend State Park situated off of Highway 84, and also from two places near Richland. On the Idaho area, it limits Steck Park, and follows Olds Ferry Road. The BLM-run Park has many activities to offer like nature viewing and camping.

Hells Canyon Reservoir runs parallel to the southeast perimeter of the NRA, and is 25 miles (40.2 km) in length. This section of the river is surrounded by Hells Canyon Wilderness. Motorized vehicles are not allowed within the wilderness. On the Idaho part, Snake River Road goes along the reservoir giving an attractive view of the river.

The Information Station is open to guests throughout the summer months. Oxbow Reservoir, which is just about 13 miles (20.9 km) in length, to the north of Brownlee, is noticeably small. Its name is “Oxbow” because of its odd doughnut shape.
