Lava Lands Visitor Center

The Lava Lands Visitor Center is the interpretive center for the famous Newberry National Volcanic Monument. This interpretive hub is situated off U.S. Hwy. 97, 13 miles south of Bend. It has a lot to offer to its visitors. It organizes interpretive programs, nature walks, displays on geology and volcanology, presentations on the cultural history of Central Oregon, and information centers. The latter provides all the essential information to the visitors. There is a small book shop here that sells books on the Central Oregon area and its history.
There are 2 scenic, self-guided interpretive trails just behind the Visitor Center. You are free to explore these trails at your own pace. These two trails are the Trail of Molten Land and the Trail of the Whispering Pines. The former ambles over the 7000 year-old lava flow from Lava Butte while the latter meanders through a beautiful ponderosa pine forest. Behind the Visitor Center is the magnificent, 500 ft (152.4 m) cinder cone called the Lava Butte.
At present, plans are being made to perk up this 30-year old Lava Lands Visitor Center during the fall of 2007. The Visitor Center is open for visitors during the fall from September 19 to October 15, 9 AM to 5 PM.
