Merriam Point

merriam point

Merriam point is a spectacular viewpoint in the Crater Lake National Park area. It is located in the Klamath County, Oregon.  It is named so as it was selected by Merriam as the fourth observation station along Rim Drive, a 33-mile (53-km) loop around the magnificent Crater Lake. The Merriam Point is located at the north entrance of the Crater Lake National Park. In fact, it is the first stop as you enter the park.

Hundreds of years after a large stratovolcano called Mount Mazama collapsed to form a huge caldera that now holds the Crater Lake, several cinder cones were formed by a series of small eruptions. One of the very large cinder cones thus formed was the Merriam Cone. The latter is situated in the northeast part of the lake.
The Merriam Cone is at an elevation of about 1,400 ft (430 m) above the caldera floor. However, its summit is about 505 ft (154 m) below the average lake level. The surface features of the Merriam Cone and absence of a crater here indicate that Merriam Cone was formed under water.

A number of Chipmunks can be spotted here at the Merriam Point. The Viewpoint offers breathtaking views of the Oregon Sapphire, the bluest of the blue lakes, the Crater Lake. It also offers panoramic views of the Wizard Island situated to the right of the Merriam Cone. Various favorite activities here include hiking, biking, etc. Merriam Point is the best place from where you can enjoy the Crater Lake sunrise.
