Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is known for its huge, oblique sand dunes and the magnificent forested trails that flourish next to the beach. It is located on the Oregon Coast that stretches about 40 miles (64.3 km) north from the Coos River in North Bend, to the Siuslaw River, in Florence. ODNRA is a part of Siuslaw National Forest. It is administered by the United States Forest Service. The dunes area is next to the Honeyman State Park.
ODNRA is a very good holiday destination that offers myriad opportunities to the visitors. These recreational opportunities include horseback riding, hiking, photography, fishing, canoeing, camping, and off-road vehicle use.
It is here that one can find the best ATV riding in the US. This is evident from the an estimate that out of more than 1.5 million people who visit this area every year, about 350,000 people are ATV users. Moreover, according to the Forest Service estimates, 40% of the ATV users are non-residents of US and that there is a 3% increase in use per year. However, you should be cautious when riding in limited site areas. The changes in the riding areas can be checked in with rangers.
No fee is charged as such. The designated route is spread in 6,140 acre (24.86 square-Km). Only class I, II, and III ATVs are permitted on the designated routes. The area of open sand is about 5,930 acres (24.01 square-Km).
You can enjoy the ATV riding throughout the year.
The on-site facilities include camp host, restrooms, groceries, drinking water, etc. There are six paved staging areas and 13 campgrounds. Four campgrounds are having direct riding access. However, there are sound restrictions in the ODNRA. This is because there are several homes and communities between the highway and the sand.
Other things that an ATV user ought to have are helmet, high ankle boots, eye-protection goggles, tinted goggles (sunglasses), sunscreen, long shirt, water, the first-time users’ map, a second machine, tow rope, extra spark plugs, and a wrench.
These dunes are full of sand edges that are really hard to see if there is no sun overhead and hence, no shadows. The drop offs of these edges range from a few inches to several hundred feet. You should also be cautious as there are many sand holes that can stop you from going over. You can also expect a fast rider at each hidden corner. You should, therefore, ride carefully. Do not drink before the ride or during the ride. This can be very risky.
