Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint

pilot butte

Pilot Butte is situated in Bend, Oregon. It is an extinct volcano and is approximately 500 feet (150 m) above the plains surrounding it. This Late Pleistocene cinder cone is located within the boundaries of Bend. Pilot Butte is popular among hikers and is one of the favorite hiking destinations. It rises up to 4,138 ft (1,261 m) above sea level.

Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint stretches over an area of 100 acres (40 ha) and covers the Butte almost completely. The state park, which includes much of Butte, the summit road, and the summit viewpoint, was acquired by the city in the year 1927. It was finally established on September 30, 1928. It is the Pilot Butte Viewpoint from where the 4th of July Fireworks are launched every year in Bend.

Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint can be reached by a 1-mile (1.6-km) paved road from the west base. The road that winds up and around the cinder cone offers spectacular scenic views. The journey to top is an unforgettable trip in itself. A trailhead is located at the eastern base of the Butte. There are three major trails that lead to the summit. The nature trail and the summit road trail are the two main trails for hikers as well as for the pedestrians. These trails cut through stands of Sage and Junipers. The road is, however, closed to autos in the winter season.

The scenic viewpoint at the top offers breathtaking views of the entire city of Bend and the major snow-capped Cascade peaks like the Broken Top, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Hood, Black Butte, Three Sisters, and Mount Bachelor. From the top of the Butte, one can enjoy the grand panoramic views of the High Desert as well. At the top, there is a viewing area that has signs depicting the geology and local history of the area. The 4 signs dealing with the view are: the Blue Mountains of Oregon, the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, the Newberry volcano, and the City of Bend.

Using this park is absolutely free. There is no drinking water available here and therefore, you should carry it along to quench your thirst after the climb. Pilot Butte Challenge is an important event organized annually in the park. Besides, there are interpretive displays to explain the history and view of the area to the visitors.
