Steens Mountain Loop Road

steens mountain loop road

At Frenchglen, the Steens Mountain Back Country Byway leads to the top of Steens Mountain. This approximately 66 miles (106 km) long back country byway is also known as Steens Mountain Loop Road. The entire loop is open for visitors till October 31.
The Steens Mountain Loop Road is uneven, coarse, and quite rocky at places. It also has sharp, narrow stretches and no guardrails. The maximum vehicle speed permitted is less than 35 mph. Moreover, cars, trailers, and motor homes with low clearance are generally not encouraged to drive on the Loop Road. Sudden, unexpected snow fall, rain, lightning storms, and high winds are a part of the uncommon dramatic weather changes here.

Visitor facilities along the Mountain Loop Road include a private campground, phone, gas, and store at Frenchglen. Also, there are BLM fee campgrounds situated at Jack man Park, Fish Lake, Page Springs, and South Steens. These campgrounds offer facilities of drinking water and vault toilets.

Major attractions along the Byway include the Malheur National Wildlife Refuges, the High Desert area, and the fascinating Diamond Craters situated along the Diamond Loop National Back Country Byway. Major activities in this area include livestock grazing, recreation, wildlife study, and mining.

The Steens Mountain is rich in natural beauty, history, and natural resources and the journey to the summit of this panoramic Mountain via the Steens Mountain Loop Road is a great experience.
