History of South Carolina

  empire state building

South Carolina, situated in the southern region of the United States of America, was one of the thirteen colonies that declared independence from the British during the American Revolution. The region, which is now known as South Carolina, was home to the Colony of Carolina, settled by the English settlers in 1670, as well as the French Huguenots in the colonial era. Most immigrants in this period were African slaves. The Carolina Upcountry, on the other hand, was inhabited primarily by Scots-Irish migrants from Virginia and Pennsylvania. In 1712, “The Carolinas” was divided into two, and in 1719, South Carolina was made a royal colony.

South Carolina established its own government and declared its independence from Great Britain on March 15, 1776. It also became the first state to endorse the Articles of Confederation, the first US Constitution. The present-day US Constitution was proposed in 1787 and South Carolina was the 8th State to endorse it, on May 23, 1788. On December 20, 1860, the state seceded from the Union and became the first state to do so.

The American Civil War started on April 12, 1861, after the Confederate batteries attacked Fort Sumter. Although no major battles were fought inland, South Carolina sent its troops for almost all the major Confederate campaigns. In early 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman marched through the state and destroyed most of the central city. During Reconstruction, South Carolina was reincorporated into the United States. Other determining events in the history of the state include the Populist and Agrarian movements of the 1890s and the development of the textile industry in the early 20th century.
