Custer State Park, situated in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota, is the state’s first and largest state park and wildlife preserve. It has been named after General George Armstrong Custer. At present, the Park encompasses more than 71,000 acres (290 sq. km.) of hilly terrain. It can be reached via the road from the nearby Rapid City. The main tourist attractions nearby include the Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore, and the Badlands National Park.
Custer State Park is home to a number of wild animals, including over 1500 free roaming bison, mule deer, elk, white tailed deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, mountain lions, pronghorn antelopes, and feral burros. The Park is best known for its scenic drives, such as the wildlife loop and the Needles Highway. Besides, the Park also comprises of a number of historic sites, fishing lakes, visitor centers, and 7 campgrounds with free showers and comfort stations. The 2 major visitor centers within the Park include the Wildlife Station Visitor Center on Wildlife Loop Road and the Norbeck Visitor Center in the northeast section of the park. These visitor centers offer a number of naturalist and interpretive programs to people of all age groups.
The main recreational activities at the Park include rock climbing, fishing, biking, hiking, horseback riding, buffalo Jeep safari rides, and boating. Other attractions in the Park include the campfire programs at Blue Bell, Center Lake, State Game Lodge and Stockade Lake campground amphitheaters; the professional theater production at the Black Hills Playhouse; and the Chuckwagon dinner. The four main resorts that function within the Custer State Park include Legion Lake Resort, a family favorite, Sylvan Lake Resort, the park’s crown jewel, with beautiful mountain and lake vistas, Blue Bell Lodge & Resort, offering a taste of cowboy living, and the State Game Lodge.
