Deadwood

deadwood

Deadwood, the county seat of Lawrence County, South Dakota, has been named after the dead trees formed in its gulch. This historic town was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. The town offers great opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, fishing, swimming, and horse back riding. The major tourist attraction in the town is the George S. Mickelson Trail, which starts in Deadwood and runs south through the Black Hills to Edgemont.

Deadwood is also home to a number of man-made lakes, including the spectacular Sheridan Lake. The panoramic Spearfish Canyon to the north of the town offers unique opportunities for rock climbing. The two major full-service ski areas nearby include the Deer Mountain and the Terry Peak. Deadwood is also known for its night life. “Midnight Star”, the most popular casino in town, is owned by American actor Kevin Costner. Deadwood is one-of-a-kind Wild West town that puts the visitors in the middle of history. The scenic beauty and the wonderfully restored architecture of this historic town make it worth a visit.
