Buffalo Gap National Grassland (BGNG), the second largest National Grassland, is situated in southwest South Dakota, United States. It is a division of the Nebraska National Forest and is managed by the U. S. Forest Service. These Grasslands surround the Badlands National Park and comprise of mixed prairie and chalky badlands. The BGNG features a deceivingly large variety of plants. Over 600, 000 acres (2430 sq-km) of these Grasslands offer great opportunities to view the beautiful prairie wildflowers in their native backdrop. The showiest displays of wildflowers are produced during late spring and late summer.
The Buffalo Gap National Grassland is also home to more than 100 species of animals, which are specially adapted to the prairie ecosystem. The major habitats of this region include the mixed grass prairie, the tall grass prairie, the short grass prairie, woody draws, wetlands, juniper breaks, rivers and ponds, and badlands formations. Besides, nearly 250 species of birds, including the Burrowing Owl, can also be spotted in the Grasslands. The most successful endangered Black-footed Ferret reintroduction program of the federal government has established a small population of these previously expirated mammals in the Conata Basin region of the Grassland. BGNG is also home to an endangered species of swift fox. The Buffalo Gap National Grassland is a perfect place for relaxation and enjoyment and attracts thousands of nature lovers every year.
