The Corn Palace, a popular tourist place in Mitchell, South Dakota attracts more than 500, 000 people every year. This multi-purpose facility comprises of a building, wonderfully decorated with beautiful designs and murals made from grains and corn. The themes of these paintings are changed on a regular basis. Some of the most impressive murals in the Palace were designed by Oscar Howe (1948-71); Cherie Ramsdell (2003); and Calvin Schultz (1977-2002).
The Corn Palace was constructed in 1892 to display the rich soil of South Dakota and promote settlement in the area. This magnificent wooden castle was renovated several times in the following years. The minarets and Moorish domes were added to the Palace in the year 1937. The Corn Palace received Homeland Security funding in the year 2004. The Palace was also featured as a hometown wonder of the world on Channel One, on November 15th, 2006.
The Corn Palace serves a number of purposes, including trade shows, Shriner’s Circus, Staged entertainment, local high school prom, and a basketball arena. It hosts the famous Home Basketball games of Dakota Wesleyan University each year. The Corn Palace in best known for its Corn Palace Festival, a citywide festival celebrated annually. Other major events hosted by the Palace include the Corn Palace Polka Festival and the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo. The Corn Palace is a unique place and is well worth visiting.
