Pierre

pierre

The city of Pierre, the capital of South Dakota, is the second least populous state capital after Montpelier, Vermont. Included in the Hughes County, Pierre was established in the year 1880. It is located opposite Fort Pierre, which stands on the banks of Missouri River. It has been the capital of South Dakota since it received statehood on November 11, 1889.

Today, this city is the most important transportation hub in the state. The major landmarks and tourist attractions in the city include the South Dakota State Capitol, South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center, and the Verendrye Museum. The site, which is now the City of Pierre, was formerly known as “Matto”, a word derived from a Dakota Indian name, “ma-to-na-kpa”, meaning Bear's Ear. Pierre is rich in history, culture, and scenic beauty and is a perfect holiday destination for people of all ages.
