The Red Cloud Heritage Center, situated just a few minutes from the Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, is housed in the Red Cloud Indian School. It aims at collecting, preserving, and exhibiting the tribal arts of the Lakota and fine arts of all Native Americans. The Heritage Center was established on the main campus of the School in 1982. It is one of the early successful museums situated on Indian Reservations.

The fine art collection at the Museum comprises of more than 2, 000 drawings, paintings, and sculptures representing many different tribal traditions of the Native Americans. The museum’s tribal art collection, on the other hand, comprises of paintings, artwork, and artifacts depicting the traditional arts and history of Lakota people. The Red Cloud Heritage Center is an exceptionally valuable cultural resource for the students of reservation schools as well as for the Lakota people on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The Center hosts the famous Red Cloud Indian Art Show every year, from the first Sunday in June to the second Sunday in August.

The Heritage Center also supports the living artists and artisans by buying and promoting their art forms. The Center also operates a Gift Shop, which has established local, national, as well as international markets. This gift shop buys and re-sells handmade Lakota items and fine arts, both traditional and contemporary. It also features an extensive collection of beadwork, porcupine quill work, jewelry, pottery, traditional decorative boxes, frames, glass wares, star quilts, house wares, and buffalo hides. In addition, the Gift Shop also offers a wide variety of books and music dedicated to the culture, history, and art of the Plains Indians. The Heritage Center holds the finest art collection of the Great Plains and is certainly worth a visit.
