The Sage Creek Wilderness Area, situated in Badlands National Park in southwestern South Dakota, is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including bison, pronghorn, coyote, deer, bighorn sheep, and rattlesnakes. This wilderness area is located to the west of the Sage Creek Basin area of the Park and encompasses nearly 64, 250 acres (260.2 sq-km). In fact, Sage Creek is the largest expanse of wild mixed-grass prairie in the NPS system. It was established in the year 1976.
The popular tourist activities in this area include camping, hiking, and backpacking. However, the nature trails within the wilderness are not marked. Also, potable water is not available in the Park. Therefore, visitors are advised to carry water. The wilderness features abundant wildflowers, a huge variety of wildlife, and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The best time to visit the wilderness area is early morning and early evening. It is a great experience to watch eagles, hawk, and turkey vultures soar on warm updrafts. The Sage Creek Wilderness Area is a mystical land in genuine sense of the word and is worth visiting.
