The South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center, situated in Pierre, South Dakota, offers a unique opportunity to the visitors to explore the glorious past through its exhibits, educational programs, and research activities. The Center provides the people a memorable experience of exploring the history, from early American Indian cultures to the arrival of white settlers and introduction of railroads and river boats in the region. At present, the Center holds an extensive collection of 1,339 Native American objects. The most impressive collection at the Museum emphasizes on the history of the Sioux Indians. Other collections mainly depict the cultural aspects of the Native American clans.
The most valuable exhibits on display include "Lewis and Clark against the Current" and "Lewis and Clark in South Dakota". The former is a creation of renowned artist Dick Termes. This spherical rotating painting offers a glimpse of the complete historic expedition of William Clark and Meriwether Lewis. “Lewis and Clark in South Dakota”, on the other hand, is put on display in the Observation Gallery. The Jefferson Peace Medals, displayed in the Center, belong to the 19th century and were gifted by Lewis and Clark during their voyage. The Lakota teepee, the model gold mine, and the interesting stories narrated by the founder are other attractions at the Heritage Center.
