South Dakota State Capitol

south dakota state capitol

The South Dakota State Capitol, situated in Pierre, South Dakota, houses the State Legislature and the offices of many state officials, including the Governor of the State. The State Capitol building, built between 1905 and 1910, is the most beautiful and fully-restored state capitol in the nation. It is an architectural gem and one of the major tourist attractions in the city. Exclusive Roman and Greek designs have been used in the interior of the building. Other impressive features of this magnificent building include its picturesque tiles, unique designs on marble pillars, and the Victorian designed glass paintings.

Designed by renowned architects C. E. Bell and M. S. Detwiler, the South Dakota State Capitol is just a modified version of the Montana State Capitol, situated in Helena. The building encompasses a total area of 114,000 square feet (10,600 square meters), and measures 161 feet (49 m) in height, 190 feet (58 m) in width, and 292 feet (89 m) in length. A variety of materials, including Indiana limestone, native field stone, and Italian and Vermont marble, has been used in the construction of the State Capitol building. This outstanding structure also features hundreds of handcrafted materials, including hand laid stone, carved woodwork, marble, and special cast brass.

Regular guided tours of the building are made available to the visitors. The tour scripts offered to the tourist have all the necessary information, including a brief description of the history of the State Capitol in Pierre. As the tours are organized by volunteers, they need to pre- scheduled much in advance. The Capitol Tour Office is situated inside the north entrance to the building.
