Verendrye Museum

The Verendrye Museum, situated in Fort Pierre in South Dakota, was inaugurated in 1968. The magnificent building that houses the Museum was formerly the Legion Community Hall. This building was built in 1933 by the Historical Society of Old Stanley County. The Verendrye Museum offers an eclectic display of exhibits, artifacts, and documents of historical interest. The most impressive exhibit at the Museum is the facsimile of the lead tablet brothers Chevalier and Louis la Verendrye buried in a bluff above the Missouri River, thereby claiming for France, the territory that ultimately became the Louisiana Purchase. The Verendrye Museum is a great learning experience and a “must-see” in Pierre, South Dakota.
