Wounded Knee

Wounded Knee, situated near the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Shannon County, South Dakota, has been named after the Wounded Knee Creek that runs through this area. It is along this creek that the bones and heart of the Sioux chief Crazy Horse were buried, following his assassination in 1877. The United States 7th Cavalry killed more than 300 men, women, and children in the same area on December 29, 1890. This famous Wounded Knee Incident has made this area a place of tourist interest. The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation near Wounded Knee was occupied by the American Indian Movement on February 27, 1973, in protest against the federal government.

The Wounded Knee Museum, situated in this region, aims at educating people about the history during the time of the Wounded Knee Massacre. The Museum exhibits also illustrate the life of the Native American people who inhabited this area and their influence on South Dakota. Wounded Knee Museum is the best place for a realistic understanding of what the Native Americans faced during their struggles with the United States during the late 1800s. The Museum holds an extensive collection of newspaper reports, movies, photographs, graphics, eye-witness accounts, and additional exhibits, which tell the story of these people and their lifestyle.

Ample parking space is made available in the museum. The Museum is also handicap accessible. Recording devices are prohibited on the museum premises. The Museum also houses an elegant gift store. A major tourist attraction near Wounded Knee is the Red Cloud Heritage Center, dedicated to the Native American Art. Wounded Knee is rich in culture and history and is certainly worth a visit.
