The Amon Carter Museum, situated in Fort Worth, Texas, was founded by Amon G. Carter in 1961. He established this Museum in order to house his collection of sculpture and painting by Charles M. Russell and Frederick Remington. Later, Mitchell A. Wilder, the first director of the Museum, expanded the collections at the Museum in several fascinating ways and included the work of a number of artists, from the first landscape painters of the 1830s to modern artists of the 20th century. At present, the museum’s unique collection comprises of masterworks-works on paper, sculpture, paintings, and books- by artists such as Thomas Cole, Georgia O’Keeffe, Charles Demuth, Stuart Davis, Alexander Calder, Alfred Steiglitz, and Winslow Homer. Some of the most impressive collections at the Museum include Childe Hassam’s Flags on the Waldorf, William Merritt Chase’s Idle Hours, and Georgia O’Keeffe’s Red Cannas.

The Amon Carter Museum also claims to hold one of the finest collections of American photography in the nation. This photography collection comprises of over 30,000 exhibition prints by more than 400 photographers and the archives and work of notable American photographers such as Eliot Porter, Laura Gilpin, and Karl Struss. As many as 700 works of American art are exhibited in the Museum’s galleries at any given time. The Museum also produces a number of publications, exhibitions, and programs related to the American Art. The Museum aims primarily at collecting, preserving, and exhibiting the finest examples of American Art; and serving an educational role through its publications and programs.

The Museum is also known for its building architecture. This “extremely elegant” building was designed by the renowned architect, Philip Johnson. It has ample gallery space for its permanent collections and many expansive galleries for its traveling exhibitions. Besides, the Museum also houses a 160-seat auditorium and a library with over 40,000 volumes. The Museum library holds nearly 7,500 microform reels of the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution and it is the only research facility available. In addition, the Amon Carter Museum has a world-class conservation center, which was added to it by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
