Deep Ellum, situated near downtown in east Dallas, Texas, is an arts and entertainment district that attracts thousands of visitors every year. It was established in 1884 when Robert S. Munger constructed his first factory in this area. The Grand Temple of the Black Knights of Pythias, the first building built in Dallas for the blacks, was also established in Deep Ellum in 1916. The major attractions nearby include the Exposition Park to the south and the Bryan Place to its north. Located directly east of the elevated I-45/US 75 freeway, Deep Ellum extends to the Exposition Avenue and is connected to downtown by the Pacific, Elm, Main, Commerce, and Canton Streets.
Deep Ellum became well-known as a prime blues and jazz hotspot in the South by the late 1930s. Clubs like The Harlem and The Palace, situated in this area, became famous because of artists such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, and Huddie Ledbetter who played here. Today, Deep Ellum’s viability as a live music hotspot is maintained by annual cultural events such as the Deep Ellum Film Festival, the Deep Ellum Arts Festival, the Code events, and the Dallas Rock Meet up Group monthly festival. Some of the famous live music venue in the District include the Deep Ellum Blues, the Dark side Lounge, the Galaxy Club, the Adair’s Saloon, the Gypsy Tea Room, the Red Blood Club, and many more.
Deep Ellum district is also home to a number of dance halls, such as Club One and Club Purgatory. Besides, there are a number of art galleries in the area. These include the Blue Square Art Gallery, Gallery 2910, the Revolution Gallery, the Nine Eyes Studio, the Pawn Gallery, etc. Deep Ellum also features many restaurants and bars such as Deep Sushi, Café Brazil, Mokah Coffee Bar, and the Baker’s Ribs. In addition, the District is a hot-bed for graffiti. Graffiti artists are used by many of the music venues to advertise music shows. Deep Ellum has a lot to offer and is certainly the best place to chill out in Texas.
