Dallas Fair Park, situated in Dallas, Texas, is a 277-acre (1.12 sq-km) educational and recreational complex known for its art deco architecture. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark on September 24, 1986. This complex is home to 6 performance facilities, a lagoon, and nine museums. Besides, many buildings that were initially constructed for the Texas Centennial Exposition still survive in the Park. The major attraction at the Park is the Texas Star, the largest Ferris wheel in North America. The main cultural event held at the complex every year is the State Fair of Texas. This fair is the largest state fair in the US and has been held at the Fair Park since 1886. At present, the State Fair begins on the last Friday of September and lasts for a maximum of 24 days.
Another attraction at the Fair Park is the Hall of State, which honors as many as 59 historical figures of Texas, such as John Reagan, Gail Borden, Peter Bell, Jose Navarro, and James Fannin. The Hall of State, designed by architect George Dahl in the Beaux-Arts style, features a 1,500 ft (457.2 m) long Esplanade of State flanked by six exhibition pavilions. It also houses a long reflecting pool and is the most representative examples of art deco architecture in the state. The Cotton Bowl Stadium, situated in the center of the Park, hosts the “Red River Shootout” game and the “Al Lipscomb State Fair Classic” game during the State Fair. The Cotton Bowl is also played in this stadium every year.
Yet another impressive feature of the Park is the Big Tex, a 49-foot (15-m) tall statue of a cowboy, wearing size 70 shoes and a 75-gallon (283-liter) hat. It is considered to be the face of the State Fair of Texas and can also talk to the visitors of the Fair. Other highlights of the Park include the Smirnoff Music Center, a world-class amphitheater; and WRR FM, a classical music broadcaster. Fair Park is a great holiday destination is certainly not worth missing.
