The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District, situated in Fort Worth, Texas, attracts thousands of tourists every year. In the early 1900s, this area was nicknamed as the “Wall Street of the West” as a number of cattle were brought and sold here by cattlemen from around the Southwest. Over 4 million head of livestock were processed every year by World War II. Several other people who came here made a beeline for "Hell's Half Acre," a potpourri of brothels, bathhouses, and saloons.
Today, the redbrick-paved streets of the Stockyards National Historic District are much cleaner than they were in the past. The area has been entirely restructured for family-friendly fun. However, the Stockyard’s collection of longhorn cattle, the “Fort Worth Herd”, fills the streets even today. The cattle drive can be best viewed from the steps of the Stockyards Visitor Center. The Visitor Center is the hub of the district and it offers advice, restrooms, and pamphlets. It also serves as the main gathering spot for all the walking tours of the Historical District.
The District also features a number of shops, where you can shop till you drop. A major tourist attraction in the area is the Stockyard Station that houses a number of restaurants, shops, a mechanical bull riding attraction, theatrical gun fights, and a depot of the famous Grapevine Vintage Railroad. The Vintage Railroad is an excursion train that takes passengers on the Trinity River Run. Other attractions in the District include the White Elephant Saloon, the Cattlemen’s Steal House, Billy Bob’s Texas, the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, Riscky’s Barbeque, the Texas Trail of Fame, and the Lonesome Dove Western Bistro. The Texas Trail of Fame is characterized by 59 bronze markers, which honor contributors to Western Heritage.
