The Kimbell Art Museum, located in the Cultural District of Fort Worth, Texas, USA, opened to the public in the year 1972. The Kimbell Art Institute was founded by Kay Kimbell, a Texas industrialist and art collector, and the Museum building was finally commissioned in 1966. This magnificent building, designed by the renowned architect, Louis Khan, is one of the most classic structures of the 20th century. The building encompasses an area of nearly 120,000 square-feet (11148 square-meters) and is in the form of a series of spaces defined by parallel barrel vaults. Rhythmic variations on a particular theme are highlighted in the interruptions and irregularities between the main spaces. This spatial rhythm continues to the exterior water features to the west of the building and finally resolves into several garden areas on the grounds. The post-tensioned reinforced concrete construction and the excellent treatment of light in the Museum are suitable to the art on display.
The Kimbell Art Museum mainly aims at acquiring rare artworks of first-class quality. It holds an extraordinary collection of Pre-Columbian, Asian, and European works. This collection includes works by European artists such as Rubens, Gainsborough, Monet, Caravaggio, Picasso, and El Greco. The collection also comprises of the only painting by Adam Elsheimer on public display outside Europe. Other main attractions in the art gallery include two unique paintings by Piet Mondrian.
The Asian collection features works from Song, tang, and Ming dynasties and jars from Neolithic China. The Japanese artwork included in this collection emphasizes primarily on the Edo and Momoyama periods. Besides, the Museum also features a collection of antiquities from the classical period ranging from Assyrian to Greek and Roman, and a number of other traveling art exhibitions. Renzo Piano Building Workshop has been recently added to the Museum.
