The Sid Richardson Collection of Western Art in Fort Worth, Texas, features an outstanding compilation of paintings by the leading artists of the American West, Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington. As many as 56 paintings from the personal collection of Sid W. Richardson, late oilman and philanthropist, are put on permanent display. Richardson acquired most of his paintings from New house Galleries in New York City during 1942-1947. At present, this unique collection of 82 paintings is owned and managed by the Sid W. Richardson Foundation and is housed in the famous Sid Richardson Museum. This museum is situated in the Sundance Square, in the heart of downtown Fort Worth.
The magnificent museum building, a replica of the original 1895 structure, opened its doors to the public in 1982, with 34 paintings by Russell and 16 by Remington. The most impressionistic works of Remington’s late period, The Dry Camp, Among the Led Horses, and the Scare in the Pack Train, are also included in the collection. The newest addition to the Remington collection is The Love Call, acquired in 1996. Other well-known paintings in the collection include Russell's Buffalo Bill's Duel with Yellow Hand (1917) and Remington's The Buffalo Runners, Big Horn Basin (1909). The Museum had a collection of 56 permanent paintings, 4 part-time employees, and 4 full-time employees by 2001. The Richardson Collection of western Art is directed since its opening by Jan Brenneman.
The Museum also features a selection of bronzes on loan from the Amon Carter Museum and two silver parade saddles made in 1947 by a renowned California saddle-maker, Edward H. Bohlin. The Collection has attracts millions of visitors every year. The Museum also offers outreach programs to local schools and community groups, and educational tours of the collection for adults and children. Books, prints on canvas, gift, posters, and cards are for sale in the museum store.
