Thanks-giving Square

thanks-giving square chapel interior

Thanks-giving Square, situated in the City Center District of downtown Dallas, Texas, is an open area devoted to promoting the notion of giving thanks as a universal, human value. The site was established in 1976 and was designed by architect Philip Johnson. The most recognizable and impressive feature of the Thanks-giving Square is the Chapel of Thanksgiving. This magnificent chapel has a spiral tower topped with stained glass windows, which leave a flood of color when looking up in the chapel. Popularly known as the Glory Window, this stained glass was designed by Gabriel Loire of Chartres, France. The entrance to this small tower is located at the end of a 125-foot (38-m) bridge, which extends over a cascading waterfall.

The Court of All Nations and the Wall of Praise, situated outside the entrance to the courtyard, are other main highlights of the Thanks-giving Square. The Wall of Praise features a mosaic based on Norman Rockwell's The Golden Rule and a part of the text from Psalms 100. It leads to a 50-foot (15-m) tall Bell Tower, the three bronze bells of which ring every hour. The Ring of Thanks Circle of Giving, located just before the Bell Tower, is am aluminum ring measuring 14 feet (4 m) in diameter. It is covered in 23-carat gold leaf and allows the visitor to walk through the ring before entering the Courtyard. The courtyard itself features splendid waterfalls and numerous aqueducts throughout the area.

Thanks-giving Square also includes several grassy areas, where hundreds of visitors relax during the lunch hour. The square is managed and monitored by the Thanks-giving Foundation, a multi-faith organization, which is dedicated to the pursuit of understanding between different faiths and religions. This organization has implemented the Multi-faith Exploration and Exchange Program recently. Thanks-giving Square is well worth visiting.
