Fort Davis National Historic Site

officers' row, fort davis national historic site

An important historical destination for the entire southwest region of the USA, Fort Davis National Historic Site played a key role in the defence structure of the region from 1854 to 1891. Situated in the western part of Texas alongside Davis Mountain ranges, the site was set up with the motive of protecting emigrants, wagons and coaches. This site is of national significance as the all-black regiments of 24th and 25th U.S. Infantry and the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry were put up at this very post.

Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and established as a National Historic Site in 1961, the Fort Davis National Historic Site location is spread over 470 acres and includes more than 100 ruins and several historic buildings. Five structures in the fort region have been restored to take visitors back in the past when the fort was at the peak of activity. Summers are exciting as volunteers re-enact the life styles of officers, soldiers, officer’s wives and servants and bring alive the period of the fort’s occupation.

Self guided tours and living history demonstrations make the trip educative and interesting. The visitor centre located in renovated barracks offers all assistance required by tourists and also provides the detailed history of the fort operations through exhibits and slide shows. A great learning experience for students would be the curriculum-based education programs for school children.

Through there are no accommodations for overnight stay, the shaded picnic area is ideal for relaxing.
