Nestled in the idyllic Davis Mountain region, on Mount Locke and Mount Fowlkes, McDonald Observatory is a renowned name in astronomical research. Managed by the prestigious University of Texas-Austin, McDonald Observatory is celebrated for its quality teaching and public education programs and the highly sophisticated instruments it uses for observation and research purposes. Its location on the high summit provides some stunning views of the night skies.
Named in the honor of William Johnson McDonald who donated USD$800,000 towards the establishment of this observatory, more than 100,000 visitors turn up annually. Four internationally acclaimed telescopes, namely the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, Harlan J. Smith Telescope, the Otto Struve Telescope and a large format imaging telescope find place here.
Visitors flock into the Frank N. Bash Visitors Center, which houses some powerful telescopes and offers spectacular everyday solar viewings. The Star Parties conducted every Tuesday/Friday/Saturday however remain the single most exciting events for children and adults. It is here that one is treated to a stunning display of constellations, planets and stars. Also a close look at the moon, galaxies, and celestial objects transport the commoner to the beautiful and amazing outer world. If the external conditions are not conducive for star viewing, there are indoor presentations that at least partially make up for the disappointment.
The Visitors Centre is also equipped with a gift shop and a café that serves delicious snacks and meals with pleasant views of the surrounding landscape. A truly must visit destination for the entire family.
