The Guadalupe Mountains National Park flanking the city of Carlsbad – New Mexico and El Paso- Texas, has the spectacular McKittrick Canyon which attracts its biggest crowds during the fall on account of the stunning bright hues of the landscape. A spectacle by itself, the exact McKittrick Canyon location was discovered by geologist Wallace Pratt in 1921 and was subsequently donated to the National Park Service in 1960. This beautiful destination is today open to one and all on account of the benevolence of Pratt and his family.
McKittrick Canyon presents every tourist with views of the abundant wildlife, thriving vegetation, geological marvels and numerous historic sites, all offering a great combination and variety. Plant life in the region is varied with several species of cacti, wildflowers and beautiful trees flourishing here. Most animals in the region are nocturnal and include mountain lions, bobcats, bats and raccoons.
Several interesting hikes are part of the trip to McKittrick Canyon, with the short McKittrick Canyon Nature Trail, the Pratt Lodge Hike that requires crossing the stream, the Grotto Hike and the Permian Reef Geology Trail ideal for geology buffs, being most popular. The McKittrick Ridge hike is the steepest trails in the park and is strictly for ardent hiking enthusiasts.
Though it is the fall that is described as truly breathtaking, every other season has McKittrick Canyon depicting a beauty of its own and none can getaway from the thrill and excitement of this picturesque location.
