New Braunfels, situated in Comal and Guadalupe Counties in Texas, was named for Braunfels, Germany. Home to a sizeable German Texan community, New Braunfels is well known for its annual German-style festival, Wurstfest. This festival is held in the town every November to celebrate the German Heritage of the city. The Cold-spring Rivers that flow through the city of New Braunfels attract a number of tourists from across the state. The two major rivers in the city are the Guadalupe River and the Comal River. The latter, merely 3.2 miles (5.1 km) long, is one of the shortest in the world. The headwaters of the Comal are situated in Landa Park, which features a number of artesian springs that flow from the Edwards Aquifer. The Upper reaches of the River are surrounded by the park, while the lower portions are meant for recreational activities.
New Braunfels is also home to the Schlitterbahn Water Park Resort, one of the most spectacular water parks in the United States. Another major attraction in the City is the Gruene Historical District, established by the sons of settlers Ernst and Antoinette Gruene. It was wonderfully restored in the mid-1970s by Cheryle Fuller and was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At present, this Historic District is a perfect vacation destination with the beautiful white water Guadalupe River below it.
