Palo Duro Canyon State Park

palo duro canyon state park

Hosting the second largest Canyon in the USA, nicknamed the Grand Canyon of Texas, The Palo Duro Canyon State Park is an exciting destination in the city of Canyon, Texas. Formed by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the small yet impressive Red River, The Palo Duro Canyon which is 120 miles in length and 20 miles in width is believed to have been home to humans for about 12,000 years in the past. The maximum depth of this canyon touches 800 feet.

Inaugurated in 1934, the park attracts millions of visitors every year who are treated to some spectacular views, scenic drives and hordes of recreational activities. Spread on over 16,000 acres of absolute natural beauty, there are lofty cliffs displaying patches of bright red, purple, yellow, orange and white, all making for a colorful sight. However, it is the 75 feet high sandstone formation called the Lighthouse which is the centre of attraction here. Several trails in the park touch upon this site and the 5 mile Lighthouse Trail that encircles the structure is extremely popular with hikers, bikers, and runners. Other major trails include the 11 mile Givens, Spicer & Lowry Running Trail, the simple 2 mile Paseo Del Rio trail along the Red River and the Triassic Trail which starts at the rim level.

Camping, horse riding and cycling are other activities available within the park grounds. A snack bar, visitor center, overnight facilities and a gift center take care of the complete needs of tourists.
