The Sophienburg-New Braunfels Archives and Museum of History, situated in New Braunfels, Texas, holds documentary historical information related to the growth and founding of New Braunfels and German emigration into the State. The Sophienburg Archives include over a thousand different collections, with new ones being added to the growing list regularly. These collections feature a wide variety of items ranging from surveys, maps, water district and government records, diaries, school records, music, family genealogies, Bibles, paintings, military records, friendship cards, newspaper clippings, marriage licenses, family movies, documents of all types, letters, almanacs, and some census lists for Comal County.

Besides, the Museum’s collection also comprises of millions of photographs of various people and places in and around the city. The General Photo Collection is an extensive compilation of photographs dating from the 1850s. The Frances Bridges Collection is a part of this photo collection. The Seidel/Braunfels Studio Photos, on the other hand, comprises of one million plus negatives from the mid ‘20s to ‘80s. Books, newspapers, and periodicals dating from the 1850s to the present are also included in the museum’s collection. Microfilms are available for the German language newspaper, New Braunfels Zeitung, published from November 12, 1852 to December 31, 1957. Similarly, the English language newspaper, New Braunfels Herald, published since 1896, is also available on microfilms at the Sophienburg Archives. The Oral History Tapes’ collection comprises of more than 2000 oral history tapes contributed by the community members. These tapes can be either heard at the Museum or can be copied on a CD for only $15 each.

The Museum also offers research services. The Sophienburg Archives aims at preserving hundreds of thousands of public documents and personal papers for the researchers. All personal names are being indexed in order to assist researchers in their genealogical pursuits. The Comal County Genealogical Society Library is a “must-see” for all those who are carrying out research into early German Texan history or German Texan genealogy. The Sophienburg-New Braunfels Archives and Museum of History is a great learning experience and well worth visiting at least once.
