Panhandle Plains Historical Museum

mastadon skull, panhandle plains historical museum

One of the most delightful experiences in Canyon, Texas, The Panhandle Plains Historical Museum is also the largest history museum in the entire state of Texas. Set up in the year 1933, the museum is devoted to the preservation of the heritage of Northwest Texas and a tribute to the early settlers of this land.

Home to about 3 million artifacts there is indeed “always something new to see”. From depiction of western heritage to fine arts, from paleontology to archeology, from textiles to sports, the exhibits cover almost everything under the sun. Grouped into permanent and special (rotating) exhibits, the most popular items on display include the Samuel Colt: Arms, Art and Invention, Artist’s depiction of the urban Texas, the plants and animals in the Natural History section, the amazing exhibit on transportation, the display on ranching activity in the region, and the extensive textiles collection among others. In the permanent gallery, find some rare works of art covering American, European and Texas art styles.

Apart from tourists, the museum attracts researchers from world over who pour into the extensive collection of published works and manuscripts available at the Museum’s Research Center. The Bob Wills Memorial Archive is a must view in this section.
The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum also hosts several cultural events and programs all year round.
