The Institute of Texan Cultures, situated in HemisFair Park in downtown San Antonio, Texas, is the third campus of the University of Texas. It was established in 1968. This Institute houses a library and a museum and serves as a primary center for multicultural education in the state. Permanent exhibits of as many as 26 ethnic and cultural groups are featured by the Institute. The exhibits displayed in the Museum represent various cultures such as the African-American, Belgian, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Lebanese, Jewish, Native American, etc. These artifacts also illustrate the impact of these cultures on the development and history of Texas.

The Institute mainly aims at promoting the origin, science, and history of the cultures of early and modern-day Texas. The Institute also hosts several annual programs and events such as the Texas Folk-life Festival. This annual festival celebrates all the ethnicities that make up the population of the state. It has been celebrated every year since 1972. Before being turned over to the University of Texas System, the Institute of Texas Cultures also served as the Texas Pavilion at HemisFair ’68. Other events hosted by the Institute include multimedia shows, chuck wagon area, puppet shows for children, Irish Heritage Day, Bigfoot in Texas, and the annual Asian Festival.

A major attraction in the Institute is a building called the ‘Back 40’. This building is a place that offers a unique opportunity to the visitors to explore and understand the early life in Texas. In fact, it is an extraordinarily accurate reproduction of buildings in the authentic historical settings. The Institute of Texas Cultures provides a fun way to learn about various Texas cultures and the many ways they shaped the state and its inhabitants. The museum and the library are a great learning experience and are not worth missing.
