La Villita, the first neighborhood of San Antonio, is situated on the south bank of the San Antonio River. It was formerly a settlement for the Spanish soldiers stationed at The Alamo. The primitive huts in the area were replaced by brick, stone, and adobe houses in the year 1819. La Villita was a village of considerable size and became the main location of General Santa Ana’s canon line in the Battle of Alamo, in 1836. After the European migrants from France and Germany moved in the area in the 19th century, the culture and economy of the village underwent a significant change.
At present, La Villita is a prosperous art community that reflects San Antonio’s past. The architecture in this area depicts the evolution of the buildings from palisade to Victorian Houses. This “little village” is also known as a shopping paradise. As many as 25 artisans work and sell their skillfully handcrafted creations in this restored Mexican Village. This historic square block of elegant restaurant and shops is also a prime center for many cultural activities and events throughout the year. With narrow streets cutting through painstakingly scrupulously landscaped grounds and past authentic adobe structures and Victorian buildings, portraying the cultural diversity of the area, La Villita has been recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
