Antelope Island State Park

Antelope Island State Park, a state park situated on the northern portion of the Antelope Island, is most developed and a scenic spot of the Antelope Island. It is, in fact, the best place to experience the beauty of the magnificent Great Salt Lake and the vast solitude of its basin. This Park is a part of the Utah State Parks System and was inaugurated in 1981.

The favorite recreational activities in the Park include camping, hiking, biking, picnicking, and saltwater bathing. Several biking and hiking trails run across the Island and offer great views of the surrounding picturesque landscape. There is very limited vegetation on the island. Cottonwood trees offer some of the only shade. Saltwater bathing is allowed at a number of beach areas. Owing to the high salt concentrations and unusually high density of water, you can easily float on the Lake just like a rubber duck!

Viewing Wildlife is yet another favorite activity at the Park. The Island abounds in a wide variety of flora and fauna native to the Great Basin Region. It is home to the American Bison, deer, coyotes, bobcats, elk, waterfowls, and a large variety of birds. The major historic sites in the State Park include the Buffalo Round-Up and the Fielding Garr House. The free-roaming animals are rounded up and counted at the Buffalo Round-Up, every year in October. On the other hand, the Fielding-Garr House puts on view a variety of ranching artifacts. Besides, guided horseback riding is also made available at the stables next to the house.

The Antelope Island, the largest island of the Great Salt Lake, is a great place to watch beautiful sunsets and sunrises. A maritime atmosphere is lent to the island activities by a sailboat marina. Facility of hot showers is also made available at the marina. Other facilities provided included rest rooms, a RV site, beach picnic area, and primitive camping. To access the Antelope Island State Park, you need to drive north on I-15 to Syracuse, then west on U-127, and follow the signs thereafter.
