Lake Powell & Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

lake powell

Lake Powell is known as the second largest human-made lake in the United States and without suspicion, the most picturesque one. It extends in 186 miles (299.3 km) from Hite, Utah to Page, Arizona. The filling process was instigated in 1963 subsequent to the construction of a dam across the Colorado River.  Situated near the south of Glen Canyon, it was not entirely full until it was the year 1980. In the year 1972, Lake Powell and the nearby landscapes were integrated into Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and ever since visitation has been amplified steadily.

Spread over 1.2 million acres (4860 square-km) of area, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area tenders supreme opportunities for backcountry and water-based recreation. The recreation area is extended in hundreds of miles, right from Orange Cliffs of southern Utah to Lees Ferry in Arizona, surrounding scenic views, geologic speculates, and a vast landscape of human history. Summers are tremendously hot, without any, shade. Winters are reasonably cold and night time temperature goes below freezing point.

Spring climate conditions are highly changeable with comprehensive periods of winds. Fall climate is usually soft. Bullfrog Visitor Center is open in the month of May here. You should make advance reservation in case you plan to visit this place. The place is accessible from Highway 276 north of Bullfrog Marina. The main attractions include exhibits related to the natural and human history of Glen Canyon and geology. Other attractions are pioneer artifacts, Ancestral Puebloan, and a life-size replica of a slot canyon. Bookstore, medical clinic and restrooms are available from May to October only.
