Matheson Wetlands Preserve

matheson wetlands preserve

Matheson Wetlands Preserve is considered as a haven in the desert. This green preserve is a contrast to the neighboring red rock cliffs and dry desert. This is a home to over 200 species of amphibians, birds including the aquatic mammals such as the muskrat, beaver and mysterious river otter and northern leopard frog. This preserve is situated along the Colorado River in Moab, Utah.

Previously, the area was referred to as the Moab Sloughs, and is referred as the same till today. The preserve is open throughout the year, dawn to dusk. The size of the preserve is approximately 890 acres (3.6 square-km). If you are planning to come here, it is advisable to bring water, bird guides, and your binoculars to easily recognize a wide range of birds - particularly during the season of spring and fall. You must bring mosquito repellents in the spring and summer season.

A well-defined, easily accessible, and miles-long trail exists in the southern part of the preserve. A walkway, made from cast-off train trestles, covers the trail’s wet regions and guides to a two-story wildlife viewing blind. In addition, you will find a map station and wetlands teaching circle, where several leaflets are available together with bird and wildlife lists. In addition, brochures for self-guided tours are also provided here. You can call the Moab Project Office in case you need any information related to tours, or a pamphlet for a self-guided tour, with meaningful and interpretive stops along the way.
