Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah. This city is situated in the northeast corner of the Salt Lake Valley and is a part of a larger urban area called the Wasatch Front. It is bordered in the northwest by the Great Salt Lake; in the west by the steep Wasatch; and in the east by the magnificent Oguirrh mountain ranges.
The Salt Lake City is known for its culture, art, and history. There are several museums in the in the city. These include the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Church History and Art, Utah Museum of Natural History, the Utah State Historical Society, and Daughters of Utah Pioneer Memorial Museum. Other major tourist attractions in the city include the Clark Planetarium, the IMAX Theatre at the Gateway Mall, the Golden Spike National Historic Site, the Lagoon Amusement Park, the Bonneville Salt Flats, Gardner Historic Village, the Bingham Canyon Mine and the Off-Broadway Theatre. The latter features ‘Laughing Stock’, Utah’s longest running comedy troupe.
Salt Lake City is also known for its music and dance performances. It is home to the famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Utah Symphony Orchestra, the Salt Lake Children's Choir, Ballet Department, Department of Modern Dance, and the Repertory Dance Theatre. The local music scene, on the other hand, is dominated mainly by small groups like blues, punk, rock and roll, and emo. The major annual events in the city include the Days of '47 Parade, gay pride parade, the Utah Pride Festival, the Greek Festival, the Utah Arts Festival, and the famous Sundance Film Festival. The Salt Lake City has been the host of Winter Olympics in 2002, and the international Salt Lake City Marathon in 2004.
Salt Lake City is also the headquarters for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The largest historic LDS site around the city is Temple Square that includes the Salt Lake Temple, the Family History library, and the historic Tabernacle. The latter is home of the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The city is also known for its recreational facilities. The world-class ski and summer resorts in the city include Deer valley, Park City Mountain Resort, and Snowbird. Other favorite activities here are hiking, camping, biking, and mountain climbing. The beautiful Salt Lake City has a lot to offer to its visitors and should be visited at least once.
