Sundance Film Festival

"spark city" - SFF poster

The Sundance Film Festival, held is January every year, is the largest independent film festival in the United States.  This cinema festival is hosted by Park City, Ogden, and Salt lake City, Utah and is also organized at the Sundance Resort. The festival is a leading platform for original and contemporary work from independent, American and International filmmakers. It features live sections for International and American documentary as well as dramatic films. Besides, the festival also comprises of a number of non-competitive showcase sections and the Sundance Online Film Festival.

Initially, the festival used to be merely a low-profile venue for independent, small-budget, filmmakers from outside the Hollywood system. Over the decades, the festival turned into a media burlesque for Hollywood celebrity directors, actors, paparazzi, and several company sponsors gifting luxury-goods to the attendees. However, in the past few years, the festival has put out all the stops to distance itself from these diversions. Buttons, which read, "Focus on Film," were handed out to all the participating film makers in 2007.

his fFilm festival was formerly known as the Utah Film Festival when it first started in 1978. However, in 1985, the Sundance Institute, a non-profit organization, took over the management of the Festival. In 1991, it was renamed as the Sundance Film Festival by Robert Redford after ‘The Sundance Kid’, his favorite character that he played in the movie, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It was this festival that brought wider attention to films like Better Luck Tomorrow, Reservoir Dogs, Napoleon Dynamite, El Mariachi, Sex, lies, and Videotape, The Blair Witch Project, Saw, and Clerks.
