Campbell House

campbell house

The historic Campbell House is located next door to the famous Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, Spokane, Washington. It was designed by two renowned architects, Kirtland Cutter and Karl Malmgren. It was finally constructed in the year 1898 by Amasa Basiliel Campbell, his wife Grace Campbell, and their daughter Helen Campbell. It was in 1924 that Helen Campbell handed over the authority of Campbell House to the Eastern Washington State Historical Society and the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.

Today, Campbell House is a community museum with historical and art exhibits. A formal restoration project that started in 1984 aimed at renovating all elements of the Campbell House complex: structures, interior design, landscape, technological systems as well as furnishings. Campbell House operates as a house museum that interprets life at the turn of the 20th century.

The tours are conducted from 1-4 PM on weekdays. On weekends, you can tour the house at your own pace. During the Thanksgiving weekend and the two weeks close to Christmas, Campbell House visitors are allowed to tour the house on their own. In Campbell House, one can enjoy festive Christmas décor, appreciate a display of historic dresses, watch baking in the kitchen, and also, participate in amusing children’s activities.

Local music students are also allowed to play the Campbell House Piano as a special treat. The fee for the tour of this old mansion and all the activities here is included in regular MAC admission fee. Entry is free for MAC members. Tours of the Campbell House are very interesting as they not only introduce the early years of Campbell House and its owners but also explain in detail about how this 1898 house functioned.
