Deer Harbor

deer harbor

Deer harbor is located at the west end of the Orcas Island that is included under the San Juan County, Washington. In spite of the fact that Deer Harbor village has some of the best water views, it is often missed by visitors due to its inconspicuous location. It is an unincorporated community. Kayaking, fishing, whale watching, and other recreational activities in Deer harbor attract tourists from all over the world. Hiking around the island can be great fun.

Deer Harbor is a spectacular place facing the Wasp Island group and having the beautiful snow capped Olympic Mountains in its surroundings. This harbor was first inhabited by a Lumini Indian encampment that lived in split cedar long houses and spent their time hunting, gathering, and fishing. It was in 1852 that the first white settlers arrived here. About 60-70 deer were killed in each hunt and the meat was carried back to Victoria. This is why this harbor came to be known as the ‘Deer Harbor’ in 1858.
Pole Pass is situated on the south-east end of Deer Harbor. The famous Spring Point marks the south-west opening to Deer Harbor. Faun Island in the harbor is yet another attraction and is well known for fishing. Van transportation to the golf course, ferry dock and East sound is provided twice daily by the Deer Harbor Marina. The latter also provides rental bikes, small water boats, etc. The Island Hoppers can be contacted to book boats to go to other islands from the Deer Harbor. The Resort at Deer Harbor provides rental cars as well.

One can reach the harbor by a ferry boat from Anacortes made available by the Washington State Ferry System. One can also opt to travel by car, plane (Kenmore Air Seaplanes or Northwest Seaplanes), bus, or a Passenger Ferry service available between Orcas Island and Bellingham. Deer Harbor’s resorts are the best places if you are looking for rest and relaxation. The small and tranquil Deer Harbor is worth a visit when you plan your next island excursion.
