Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium is Tacoma’s treasured wildlife sanctuary that hosts a huge variety of animals, birds, amphibians and water animals. Spread out in about 30 acres (12 ha) of land and part of the popular Point Defiance Park, the zoo is an absolute delight for all members of your family. Young and old will equally enjoy the numerous and exquisite beings living here including peacocks, penguins, snakes, Asian elephants, sea horses, sharks, polar bears, musk deer, reindeers and the rare Beluga whales among others.
A special attraction that has been inaugurated recently is the exclusive section for children called the Kids Zone. Filled with engaging exhibits, it offers an amazing learning experience for kids who with great fun understand the lives of animals, their food, water and other habits.
What really adds beauty to the entire visit is the sudden and unexpected close encounter with animals, who are actually taking a stroll with their keepers. Walking to the aquarium where the Rocky Shores exhibit is put up, you may actually bump into a chimpanzee. The popular marine displays are the seahorse exhibit and the tropical coral reef aquarium that houses about 40 sharks,
The zoo’s annual event is a lights extravaganza called Zoolights that lightens up the entire expanse with millions of light bulbs. Held during December, these Christmas lights bring out several animal forms and historic monuments. Live performances and joy rides for children are really fun. Â
