Stadium High School is the celebrated 100 year old school in Tacoma, Washington with many laurels to its name. Stadium High School finds place in the Guinness book of World records for having pulled off the world’s largest school reunion in 2006.
Christened as Tacoma High School when its first batch started on Sep 10th 1906, the school has indeed come a long way. Treated with pride and admiration not only by people who have been part of the institution but also by the citizens of Tacoma, for whom it is an architectural marvel beautified by the immensely scenic surroundings.
Initially the Northern Pacific Railroad Company who was financing the project in 1891 intended it for a hotel and it is believed that they granted the construction responsibilities to Hewitt and Hewitt of Philadelphia. The plans of the hotel never materialized but the castle shaped rock solid building for school was constructed at a cost of about $500,000. A series of renovations have kept the school building intact, the major one being the 2 year long restoration that ended in 2006 Sep aimed to conserve the ‘Brown Castle’ exteriors and also restore the interiors.
Stadium Bowl, one of the major highlights of the school structure, is a vast stadium with grassy slants accommodating about 40,000 spectators. Stars musicians and famous opera singers have performed here include Louis Armstrong. National leaders and Presidents such as Gen. John Pershing, Babe Ruth, Theodore Roosevelt and Warren Harding have addressed gatherings.
Stadium High School is extremely close to the hearts of Tacoma residents and visitors will also admire the grandeur that the building effuses.
