State Capitol Museum

The Washington State Capital Museum, located in Olympia’s historic building – Lord’s Mansion, is perhaps the most educative collection of exhibits highlighting the history of the state. Home to a fascinating collection of both permanent and temporary displays, the museum also has in its premises a number of societies that work on preserving heritage and culture.

With an aim to conserve the heritage of Washington, the items displayed offer a comprehensive view to visitors for studying the past of this region through social, political and cultural angles. Two floors of well arranged artifacts are truly captivating with the most popular and enchanting item being the permanent display “Olympia: Her Present, Proud Position”. This well presented exhibit takes us through the evolution of Olympia from the olden days of war and turmoil to the present day of prosperity and also highlights the major developments that resulted in its emergence as the state capitol. The contribution of its eminent citizens to the present glory of the region is also brought out effectively.

Another enthralling permanent display is the Ethnobotanical Garden which is home to a rare and wonderful collection of native Northwest flora. The other category of changing exhibits are rotated periodically offering scope for new items related to the State history to find their way to the public. State Capitol Museum Outreach Center handles the Traveling Exhibits Service that lends some of its exhibits to local and regional associations.

The books and gift store in the museum is an ideal place to pick up an informative book or an impressive gift.
