Tacoma is a port city in Pierce County, Washington with a population of about 2 million and is located in Puget Sound, an adjunct of the Pacific Ocean. Considered to be the gateway to the Pacific Rim, Tacoma is an economically vibrant city and trade forms an important part of its industry.
Popularly referred to as the “City of Destiny” as it was chosen in place of Seattle for the western terminus of Northern Pacific Railroad's transcontinental route in 1873, Tacoma is increasingly being considered as a progressive city offering international living standards.Â
Places of historic importance include Engine House No. 9, a fire station built in 1907 that finds place in the National Register of Historic Places. The movie, “10 Things I Hate About You” was shot at the Stadium High School, part of the Tacoma School District. Fireboat No. 1, built in 1929, is put on a display after 54 years of service. Now one among the five boats listed under the National Historic Landmark it offers visitors a close look at its exteriors.
Also termed as the cultural hub for the South Puget Sound Region, the Museum of Glass and the Chihuly Bridge of Glass gallery with exemplary artifacts is a treat for visitor’s eyes. Home to several musical bands and theatre companies, the acclaimed Broadway Center for the Performing Arts puts up shows of nationally renowned artists all through the year.
